World Health Summit: Charité Welcomes International Health Experts

International health experts and scientists from the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin are contributing their expertise on the occasion of the sixth World Health Summit (WHS) concerning solution strategies for global medical challenges. The core topics of this health summit include the Ebola epidemic, the impact of climate change on health, demographic changes, and preventative medical care options in so-called megacities.

The WHS is jointly sponsored by Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande, and EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso. Around 1,200 internationally renowned representatives from the spheres of science, industry and civil society are expected to attend. Against the backdrop of recent events, the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa will be the object of intense discussions in the context of a special symposium organized in cooperation with the German Federal Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Health. Further topics to be addressed during this WHS include contemporary lifestyle-related diseases such as obesity and cardiovascular problems. The public is invited to take part on Wednesday, October 22, for a series of lectures and workshops addressing general topics such as healthy ageing and the impact of demographic trends on public health.

In addition to the German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Federal Health Minister Hermann Gröhe, numerous Charité experts are also actively participating in this WHS. Charité Executive Board Chairman Prof. Dr. Karl Max Einhäupl, Dean Prof. Dr. Annette Grüters-Kieslich, and Medical Director Prof. Dr. Ulrich Frei, in addition to Prof. Dr. Detlev Ganten, President of World Health Summit, will present lectures and participate in the workshops.

The World Health Summit takes place from Sunday, October 19, through Wednesday, October 22, at the Federal Foreign Office located at Werderscher Markt 1, 10117 Berlin. The conference will be held in English.

World Health Summit
The WHS was established in 2009 on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Charité in Berlin. Experts from more than 80 countries take part in this international health summit. The particular goal of the WHS is to promote cooperation among representatives from the fields of science, industry, politics and civil society. Together they formulate specific recommendations and present them to governments and decision-makers around the world.
